After graduating in science from Kashmir University and the National School of Drama, he studied theatrical art forms in India on a fellowship from Sangeet Natak Akademy. He started his career as an actor in the Malayalam film Football in 1982. He has been associated with films, theatre, and television as a director, writer, actor, and producer. He has collaborated with Shyam Benegal on numerous films and television productions as an associate director. He is an expert on Bhand pather (a folk and traditional art form of Kashmir) and has directed and produced many theatrical productions, short films, documentaries, and series for television. He has acted in Bollywood films like Raajneeti, Zindagee Na Milegee Dobara, Janooniyat, etc. He is the ex-director of Cinemaya Media India Pvt. Ltd. and the proprietor of MARTAND MOVIES. He has served as a member of the jury for the South ll National Film Awards in 2015 and as the chairman of the jury for the South ll and a member of the central jury for the National Film Awards in 2020. He is also the consulting editor of the WFY (World for You), an international online digital magazine in English with an Indian diaspora focus. He is the President, folk and traditional art forms at the Indian Diaspora Global. He is also the secretary of the ALG Cultural Society in Jammu (J&K).
